There’s something deliciously perverse about staring through the clear glass. All of
my senses engage as I wait in line—the fragrance that fills the air as the fire crackles
beneath the foil wrapped treats wafts under my nose, the beauty in each and every small
package as they line the shelves with tiny dots and colored sprinkles mesmerizes me, the
sound made as the silver sheet is peeled back to reveal the magnificence it holds
captivates me, and the anticipation of the taste makes my mouth water. Ummm… just
thinking of the first bite into the moist brown exterior with its bittersweet Belgian
chocolate complimenting the flavor of the Madagascar bourbon vanilla that oozes from
its inside has me trembling. The black and white cupcake—it’s simply perfection.
Amidst the skyscrapers in Los Angeles’ South Park neighborhood, Sprinkles is a

gem tucked away for those of us who seek out a small piece of heaven. I don’t come here
often, but when I do it’s for that one special treat. The menu describes it as, “Yin and
Yang.” An ancient proverb that says, “Complementary opposites, such as light and dark,
day and night, and masculine and feminine, seemingly may exist as contrary forces, but

are actually interconnected.” Simply put, it says one gives rise to the other and it’s true—
opposites attract. Without the vanilla inside, one could not possibly crave the chocolate

outside—looking at the two parts united has me drooling.
“You know what they say about staring through the glass,” a deep husky voice says
from behind me.
His words tingle my skin and my gaze snaps up. “Excuse me?” I stop short, in a
daze, not even sure what he just said I was so lost in my thoughts.
He chuckles. “You know what they say about staring through the glass,” he repeats.
My eyes blink and come into focus on the upward tilt of his full lips. Then my eyes
move to his smooth pale skin flecked with a light stubble, his nose seemingly sculpted
even with a slight imperfection in its slope, large eyes with the most unusual gray color
swirling from within, and chocolate brown colored hair framing his face in pieces—I’m
not sure if he has just rolled out of bed or if product molds it just so. Either way, he is
utterly beautiful.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Just be careful so you don’t fall in like Alice.” He smiles, displaying his bright
white teeth.
“Again, I’m sorry but I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I notice his eyes
sweep over me and my heart starts pounding.
“Through the Looking Glass,” he responds in a dangerously husky voice.
This time when he speaks I catch an accent, ever so slight but extremely sexy.
It reminds me of how Robert De Nero talks, just not as loud or fast. I continue to stare,
unable to respond. I notice that his physique is long and lean. He’s dressed in worn jeans
that fit him perfectly. His orange laced hiking boots scream I don’t conform. A pair of
tortoiseshell sunglasses hang from the V of his gray sweater, which clings to his body
perfectly. And an outdoor vest tops the outfit. It throws me off. It makes him look more
like an Abercrombie model than a James Dean type. It’s a navy blue down and quilted
one with a silver zipper. I don’t know why, but something about his outfit, about this
man, captivates me.
“Number 98,” calls the girl from behind the counter.
He steps closer. His warm breath whispers across my neck. “Through the Looking
Glass is the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. When Alice gets too close to the glass, she
falls in and starts on a crazy journey,” he tells me as his arm waves in the air with a green
ticket on display. Stepping closer, his gaze cuts from mine to the glass case as he hands
his number to the clerk whose wearing a cute brown apron with the word Sprinkles
scripted across it.
“Can I have a dozen of the black and white cupcakes?” he asks.
Suddenly alarmed, my eyes dart to the case as I watch the single remaining row of
beautifully crafted cupcakes diminish until there are none left. My irritation flares as I
glance at my number—97.
The beautiful stranger hands the clerk his credit card and waits to sign the slip.
“I was number 97, my number was before yours,” I say as he’s handed the bag that
holds his treasure.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Here let me get the sales clerk’s attention so you don’t have to take
another number,” he says.
I want to stomp my feet. I want to scream. I don’t want her attention. I don’t want
another number. I want the cupcakes that he stole from me.
“Miss,” he calls draping his perfectly fit body over the case. She looks his way and
with a charming grin he says, “Can you help this lovely lady? She missed her number
being called.”
“Of course, I’m so sorry. How can I help you?” the girl asks averting her eyes from
the man who looks like he should be on the cover of GQ magazine, over to me.
He smiles at me with a face that belongs on a billboard. “Don’t fall in.”
I swear he’s goading me. But then he tips his chin and a sexy, smoldering grin passes
over his lips and I’m not so sure anymore. He turns to look at me one more time before
he exits, and excitement flushes over my face. I nod a slight cursory acknowledgement,
then he disappears and disappointment washes over me—he’s gone. Crap. The cupcakes
are also gone. Double crap. And now I’m left wondering if he saw me staring at that
flavor? Did he distract me on purpose so he could purchase them first? Urrr…I’m so
angry right now I consider walking out, but when the clerk asks me what I’d like I settle
for the Vanilla Milk Chocolate cakes—they are the mirror reflection of the black and
whites, with vanilla cake and chocolate frosting, but they are not nearly as good

Missing Girl by Piper Punches

Title: Missing Girl
Author: Piper Punches
Genre: Fiction/Crime
Publication Date: January 31, 2014

In life my name was Sophia Lucia Cruz. In death it is simply missing girls. Not even singular, but plural, as if there was never one single part of me that was unique or separate from all the other girls that were buried in that harsh Mexican dirt; victims of circumstance, irrevocable choices, and just plain bad luck. If I still had the capacity to cry, I would, because it is that sad and tragic. But when the knife slid deep into my belly and the blood gurgled at the base of my throat I knew that tears wouldn't save me and they won't change my story now.

Sophia Cruz was what many would consider an average 17-year-old girl from Mission Valley, until the day she had a knife put to her stomach and fear inserted into her heart. Some may have called it stupidity. She called it a necessary sacrifice. Why else would she leave everything behind to walk arm in arm with the devil into a world of prostitution and human imprisonment?

This is Sophia's story. She wants you to know who she was before that day. Before she became just another missing girl . . .

Missing Girl, is a powerful, provocative story that explores the depths of familial love and the horrors of the human trafficking epidemic that plagues our global community. Sophia's story is a fictional account of what so many real- life women and children experience every single moment of their lives when they are forced into sexual slavery and human imprisonment.

Sitting beside her, I knew that I would never again experience a relationship with another human being that wasn't tainted. I knew what my captors had in store for me. I knew that even if I was able to figure out a way to break free and find my way back home that I wouldn't be whole again. I was broken like the woman sitting next to me and for one moment I wanted to feel connected to another person. An overwhelming desire filled me, not a physical desire but the type of emotional longing to share a moment with another person; to hold a secret between the two of you even if the moment is fleeting and ultimately meaningless.

Review by Jenny

I'm giving it 3 1/2 stars.

I don't usually say this but I feel like the story was cut way too short. The premise of the story of the horror of being sold as a slave, had hardly  scratched the surface. I wanted more! I wanted to know the struggles & fears. Yes, they touched on different aspects but nothing in detail! It only went into some depth about 1 "outing". With that being said, what is written is so very sad! Sad that this is true! My heart hurts for these young girls & boys & their families! I'm looking forward to her book 60 Days about Lizzie's story.

About this playlist: When I write, I rarely listen to music. But I often hear songs that have a phrase or a word or even a vibe that remind me of characters or settings in my story. Missing Girl isn't very long and neither is my playlist, but sometimes it's about quality not quantity.

1. Put Your Lights On – Santana/Everlast

2. Miss Missing You – Fall Out Boy

3. Lights – Ellie Goulding

4. 10 2 10 – Big Sean

6. Hallelujah – Leonard Cohen

Piper Punches grew up in a rural Missouri town in the far west suburbs of St. Louis. As early as kindergarten, Piper began her adventure as a storyteller. It wasn't long before others caught on that her talented storytelling was actually a disguise for her tendency to be a pathological liar. Luckily, by the time high school rolled around she got her act together and began to channel her bad girl tendencies into something constructive.

By the age of 16 she had written her novel, Silent Witness; a John Grisham- like tale about the treachery and brutality of the Colombian cartel. Before ever hitting the book shelves, Silent Witness was adapted into a screenplay that was picked up by a major Hollywood studio. It was at this time that Piper learned the harsh lessons of Hollywood and the literary world. NEVER pay an agent one measly dollar until you have a contract in your hands and listen to your parents when they advise you against blindly sending $500 to have your dreams come true overnight. Sometimes parents actually know what they are talking about.

For the next several years (okay, about 20 years) Piper held onto her dream of becoming a published novelist, but decided to take up procrastination instead. It didn't pay well, but it sure felt great to get nothing accomplished and pursue other random dreams. Finally, in 2012, after an eight year period as a social worker and a seven year stint as a business owner Piper decided it was time to get back into the habit of storytelling . . . err, writing. She began freelancing and ghost writing for several popular websites, while continuing to postpone writing her original work.

Piper's mother had told her during her teenage years that writers write what they know. Of course, she didn't take her mother's advice back then and continued to write about drug cartels (because didn't you know that every 16 year old living in rural Missouri knows about drug cartels? Meth - maybe. Colombia drug runners - no). However, in true Piper fashion, after 20 years she finally took that parental advice.

In late fall of 2013, Piper debuted her first novel as a bona fide adult. The Waiting Room is a novel that started as the title of a short story collection, but quickly proved it could be so much more. It evolved into a story about the complexities of family, the invisible bonds that connect people, and the pain that can reverberate through the choices we make.

Piper Punches lives 45 minutes from downtown St. Louis with her husband and two daughters. She continues procrastinate and write on a daily basis and is excited to share her stories with new readers each and every day!

4. My parents decided public school was a bad influence on me when in the 7th grade I decided to use the school's copy machine to alter my report card. I was promptly sent to a catholic school for 8th grade and went to a Catholic high school.

8. At the age of 27, I decided to stop trying to dye my hair lighter and go for the natural look. That is when genetics decided to laugh in my face and began weaving gray throughout my hair. Needless to say, I now have to dye my hair every three weeks.

9. I visited NYC in 2010 and had the opportunity to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. But, because I hate the cold, I ended standing inside of a mall and watching the parade from a window.

10. The most moving experience I ever had was when I visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Atlanta.

11. I love to read, but I am not someone that plows through books. I like to take my time and fall in love with the story. Sometimes I will purposely take a month or more to finish a book because I don't want it to end.

12. Aside from writing, I also teach music and movement to preschoolers.

13. The job that shaped and molded me into the person I am today was at a domestic violence shelter where I worked for 8 years.

16. My husband and I applied for The Amazing Race. Still waiting on that phone call. . .

17. Once I find a pair of shoes I love, I never want to let them go. I have stapled, glued, and taped shoes back together because I couldn't fathom throwing them away.

18. I am only 5'1, so high heels are my best friend.

Rhonda Dennis Author Spotlight

What do Magnolia, Jace, Honey, String Bean, Emily, The Blue Claw, Holden & Jackson have in common? They are all from the books of this weeks author spotlight with Rhonda Dennis.

Rhonda is the author of the popular Green Bayou Novels and the hilarious Magnolia Blossoms.

Rhonda Dennis' first career was in EMS, but later in life, she attended college as a non-traditional student. After graduating, she felt compelled to write a short story. The words flowed, and the manuscript for "Going Home: A Green Bayou Novel Book One" was drafted. Rhonda has since published six novels and three short stories in The Green Bayou series, and has released a romantic comedy called "Magnolia Blossoms." Rhonda, who resides in South Louisiana, was a nominee in multiple categories for the 2013 Indie Romance Convention Readers' Choice Awards, and is also a Nook and Amazon Best Selling Author.

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT RHONDA DENNIS:

1.  My taste in movies, music, and television shows is so eclectic it's pathetic.  Although, a good slapstick comedy will win a movie battle every single time.
2.  I might have a Scentsy/Yankee Candle addiction, as well as Bath and Body Works products.  Maybe it's just a smell-good obsession.  Who knows?
3.  In addition to my Bachelor's Degree, I hold three minors: Humanities, History, and Government, and was one class shy of an English minor.
4.  I'm a pretty darned good shot.  Like really, really good.
5.  I'll eat the heck out of most seafood, but I'm not a fan of fish.  My fish can't taste fishy.  Does that make sense?

MAGNOLIA BLOSSOMS
SYNOPSIS:
Life isn't easy--especially when you're the reclusive daughter of a melodramatic attorney openly mocked for his commercials, and a free-spirited mother who gives art lessons in the nude. Their over the top personalities make it easy for the sheltered and introverted Magnolia Berrybush to swim in a sea of anonymity--until the day she finally snaps.

Desperate to break free from a clandestine world above her parents' garage, she devises a plan to make her mark--serial killing! Unfortunately, she discovers that her heart and stomach aren’t ready to handle the life of a cold-blooded murderer, so she’s forced to move on to Plan B.

During her ill-fated attempt at achieving infamy, Magnolia meets Honey LeReaux, a hooker who is well past her prime. Ironically, Magnolia begins to blossom as she plunges head first into a seedy world, but realizes that smutty books and adult films have done little to prepare her for the real world.

Will Magnolia ever break free, or is she destined to live her life hiding in the shadows of her secret world?

REVIEW BY JENNY:
5 hilarious stars
Rhonda has been on my top fav author list since the 1st words I've read of hers, but this book has put her over the edge. I loved it for so many reasons!
It starts with Magnolia Berrybush, who is an extremely awkward, clumsy, sheltered introvert. I've seen & heard awkward & sheltered but damn! This girl is a mess!! After a lot of really funny yet unfortunate mishaps, Maggie realizes that she's tired of this life & wants to be known in the world! So she does what any 32 yr old would do. She decides to be a serial killer!! Ha! After she realizes that's not her calling, Maggie goes on a mission to find her place in this big world!! She befriends a hooker, who becomes her 1st friend & teaches her very important & helpful life lessons! It was awesome watching her blossom from the scared, helpless, awkward shell of a girl to a strong, funny, confident, beautiful woman! Can Maggie survive the real world? Will failure drive her back into the world of a hermit? Will she find true love & ever experience the firsts that's she only dreams about?? Will Nick or Jace be that "one"?
This book is a must read! Very few books make me laugh out loud, but this one did a lot! There were so many funny, happy & OMG moments! But there were also some special, tender moments that made me go "awwwww"! Thank you my friend for once again delivering an amazing novel!!

REVIEW BY TINA:
5 awesome stars
I have to start off by saying this is the first time I've read a romantic comedy. I have NEVER laughed so much from reading a book! There were a few parts I laughed so hard I started crying & a few parts that just made me cry from the overwhelming love & support for Jace as he said goodbye to his brother! Magnolia was such a klutz I don't know how she survived in the book. But thanks to Nick being the ruthless person he was Magnolia found her true love! I have to say Jace turned out to be the better choice! I will forever remember all the characters in this book. I have yet to read a book more than once but I would definitely read this one again! Rhonda you have done it again!

 JEN'S INTERVIEW WITH RHONDA DENNIS:

Jen: Good morning Rhonda. Tell me a little about yourself. What makes you, you?
Rhonda: Oh, the layers of Rhonda! I'm incredibly shy, until I get to know you. Then I'm a total clown. I'm loyal to my friends. I'm very passionate, and I love with all my heart: family, friends, projects, etc. Unfortunately, it sometimes leads to heartache, but it's a risk I'm willing to repeatedly take.

Jen: That's the best way to be. I'm the same way! You incorporate the culture of living in the south, specifically south Louisiana, in your books. Why is this important?
Rhonda: I'm so full of Louisiana pride! Our area is so rich with history and culture, and I think it would be a travesty not to include some of it in my writings.

Jen: I agree. Louisiana culture is the best. Laying in my bed is my fav place to read. What's your fav place to write?
Rhonda: Ironically, kicked back in my bed is my favorite place to type. It's nice and comfy, quiet, and I can get lost in my fantasy world. Other than that, I have an office that I write in, too.

Jen: Hey, whatever gets those creative juices flowing! Right?? The Green Bayou Novel's (GBN) are my favorite series. Are you done with that series? Or can we expect a spin off?
Rhonda: Thank you!!! I said I was done with the series, but the characters still talk to me every now and then. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of revisiting Green Bayou sometime in the future.

Jen: Awesome!! I miss my Green Bayou family! LOL! Magnolia Blossoms is your newest novel. It's way different than GBN's. What lead you in this other direction to write a romantic comedy?
Rhonda: Oh yeah! It's very different than GBN. I've been wanting to write Magnolia's story since before "Deceived," however, I wouldn't start on it until I finished the Green Bayou books. Plus, when I'd try to describe my novel concept to others, I would always get the blank stare/fake smile combo, so I was scared people wouldn't get my sense of humor. Luckily, I just sucked at telling my vision to others. The book has been getting excellent reviews!

Jen: I have to agree! Magnolia Blossoms is awesome! Definately 5 stars! We all have our favorite characters. Who's your fav character to write?
Rhonda: So far, Magnolia and Honey! Oh, and Dan Wan. LOVED writing his part!

Jen: Hahaha!! Honey is my fav!! Omg I bet writing Dan Wan was a trip! What can we expect in the future with your writing?
Rhonda: Well, I have two projects in the works. One is another romantic comedy, the other is a romance, but more on the dramatic side.

Jen: Super awesome! I can't wait!! And the most important question. What's your guilty pleasure?
Rhonda: Chocolate! I'm such a sucker for chocolate. Darn you for tasting so freaking good!
Jen: HAHA!! Chocolate is the best! Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with me! Good luck on your future endeavors!

Tabby serves two plates and slices the homemade bread. She brings the plates over to the table and quickly returns for the bread.
"Taste it, Alastor, please." says Tabby, smiling. She takes a seat next to him.
Panther looks down at the plate, grinning. He inhales deeply, nodding. "Angel, this looks and smells amazing."
He takes his fork and takes a slice of pot roast with some carrots.

"Hmm, it tastes great! I love it," says Panther, looking over at Tabby.
Tabby blushes with pleasure, smiling up at him. "Thank you, I'm pleased that you like my cooking."

Panther leans over, closer to her. He looks into her eyes.

"Angel, I love a lot of stuff about you. I would like to enjoy tasting everything."

Tabby blushes, pleased. She looks at his full delicious lips. She licks her lower lip, recalling his kisses.
"Yes, that would be wonderful. I look forward to you tasting everything," replies Tabby, blushing. She looks up into his golden honey brown eyes.
She blinks and pulls back to take a bite of her food. "I made the bread, it's nice and warm. I always eat alone. Sometimes my friend Barbie from the café will have dinner with me," says Tabby. She continues a constant chatter through dinner.
eats the delicious meal, smiling at her. He takes a drink of his wine. "Oh wow, so your Mom wants you to return home."
I don't like that and if I can stop it I will. I want her close so I can see her, he thinks.
"Would you care for some apple pie," asks Tabby, looking at his plate. "I could give you some more pot roast".
Panther leans back, taking the last drink of his wine. He smiles at her. "Angel, the pot roast is delicious but I'm full."

"Awesome, how about the pie?" asks Tabby, grinning.
Yeah, like if he would ever get fat. I know and seen him work out. Oh gawd, he's simply delicious, she thinks.
Panther observes her desire as it sparks in her eyes. He leans forward, and takes her hand. He pulls her up from her chair and onto his lap. "Angel, I want some desert but not pie."
Tabby sits on his lap, allowing him to pull her close. She meets his hungry kiss. She moves her left hand up his neck to bury it in his soft light brown hair.

He moans when he feels her fingers slide through his long hair.

Oh yeah, soft and silky. I'm in heaven. I love everything about Alastor. He's setting me on fire.
